Breast feeding and weight loss due to diet or post bariatric surgery the breast can sag and one loss the perky and youthful look of the breast. Aging and gravity give your breast that pull which lead to breast sagginess and ptosis.

Following are factors leading to breast ptosis and sagginess

  • Changes in breast volume and elasticity over time
  • Lifestyle
  • Genetics and familial
  • Pregnancy and weight gain during pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding and how long it is done
  • Body weight fluctuations over time.

A breast lift (or mastopexy) is performed to correct droopy or saggy appearing breasts, creating fuller and perkier breasts. It involves lifting the position of the nipple and often increasing the breast volume, especially in the upper part of the breasts.

WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE INVOLVE?

The breast lift surgery  also called mastopexy surgery is day surgery done under  general anesthetic and  you will be expected to be going home in 2-3 hours after surgery. When the breast have sagginess but if patient has good  volume, a mastopexy alone will restore shape and projection. In other cases if there is loss of volume than breast implant will achieve upper breast fullness in combination with mastopexy.

A mastopexy involves removal of  overstretched sagging skin from beneath the breast and repositioning the nipple and breast tissue to a more youthful perky position. During breast lift procedures the nipples and areolas remain attached to their blood and nerve supply while they are repositioned. Depending on the size and shape of your breasts, the amount of skin to be removed, quality of skin and positioning of the nipples, Dr. Asif Bhatti can recommend one of the following techniques:

Circumareolar  technique – involves a circular incision made around the areola. This technique is a minimally invasive procedure that achieves a small degree of lift. It results in a scar around the areola and is also suitable for reducing the size of the areolar, you can also see the information regarding Areolar Reduction.

Vertical  technique – named so because of the type of scar it leaves. It results in a scar that extends around the areola and down the midline of the breast to the lower breast fold. Although this procedure is slightly more invasive, it achieves a slightly  larger degree of lift.

Anchor technique – involves an anchor-shaped scar that extends around the areola, down the lower midline of the breast and along the lower breast fold. This is required in those who require a significant lift.

WHAT IS THE BEST SURGICAL OPTION FOR ME?

THERE ARE A NUMBER OF FACTORS THAT Dr Asif Zubair Bhatti NEEDS TO CONSIDER WHEN DECIDING WHICH SURGICAL OPTION IS MOST APPROPRIATE.

THESE INCLUDE:

  • Grade  of ptosis (sagging) of the breast and how much cm does the nipple need to be lifted
  • Skin quality – loose with too many stretch marks or thick and firm without stretch marks.
  • Breast tissue quality – firm or soft. Soft breast tissue is very difficult to handle and typically always wants to sag! Furthermore, soft breast tissue will always be soft – it can’t be made “firm”.
  • Breast tissue volume – the greater the amount of natural breast tissue the more difficult the surgery. as it will entail breast reduction.
  • How “detached” your breast tissue is from the chest wall muscles The distance from the nipple to the lower breast fold.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SINGLE AND TWO STAGE PROCEDURE?

Combined breast lift and augmentation (Single stage procedure).

The ideal candidate for this is someone who has minimal breast tissue. However, there are some technical limitations with the implant size that can be used with such an operation. Furthermore, even if you are an ideal candidate, there is a small chance of you requiring further surgery to “fine tune” your results. You should wait until you are fully healed (approximately one year) before considering additional surgery.

Two Staged Approach

In a two stage approach Dr. Asif Bhatti typically performs a breast lift first, and an augmentation as a second operation at a later date. The ideal candidate in this scenario is a patient who has a significant amount of natural breast tissue that has sagged. In the first stage of the procedure, the main aim is to improve the shape and position of the breast, as in a regular breast lift. Generally speaking the augmentation is performed a minimum of 3 months after the mastopexy to increase the size of the uplifted breast.

WHAT RECOVERY SHOULD I EXPECT?

After mastopexy one can expect some  swelling and bruising  and feel some  pain and discomfort between 3-7 days. Normally use of pressure bra and some painkillers will be helpful to counteract all these problems. You should take between 1-2 weeks away from work and refrain from exercise  for up to 4 weeks.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE SURGERY?

As a general rule, you will receive follow up appointments with Dr. Asif Bhatti at 48 hours .He may see you in 1 week and than 1 month time to check that the breast lift is being steady and stable.

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?

Initially, you will notice some swelling and upper fullness to your breasts. This will slowly settle and most of the swelling would have  settled after six weeks. However, the “final” results take 3-6 months. The normal process of ageing, gravity, weight  changes and  or hormonal factors will continue to affect the size and shape of your breasts.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH BREAST SURGERY?

As with any surgery there are always risks but these will be fully explained by Dr. Asif Bhatti in your consultation. Some common risks include bruising, swelling and temporary numbness and more uncommon risks can be infection, bad scarring, asymmetry and bleeding.

A DETAILED CONSENT FORM WILL BE DISCUSSED WITH YOU IN THE CONSULTATION.

WHAT ARE THE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH BREAST UPLIFT SURGERY?

Our cost for a breast uplift or mastopexy will be discussed in your consultation as it is a very individualized surgery. This price can vary if you choose to also opt for an augmentation..
